Reality Rap and the Hatred It Generates by Ethan Hill
Reality rap is a sub-genre of rap tunes, and it is a tool employed by people to tell a tale or to amuse an audience. Artists and composers put their feelings and thoughts into their music. Music is quite effective because the beat is so appealing and the words can certainly relate to. Now some kinds of music might have you feeling like going out and hanging out the night away. Regardless of what type of music you listen to it has an effect on your mindset, your individuality, and it even affects the world around you. Gangster rap music may have a bad impact on you and your society. Once you start listening to these songs you begin to want to be like these rappers.
Rap is about traditions, identity and the future. Gangster rap songs originated in mid-1970 in south Bronx of New York City. It is a cross-culture product. Rapping is saying poems to the beat of music it was originally called emceeing. It attracts its beginnings from the Jamaican art form known as toasting. Reality rap is not merely rapping; it is also DJing, break dance and graffiti art. Detractors criticize many rap music as a boastful campaign of violence; others admire gangster rap as an inventive manipulation of cultural idioms and credit many artists with an intense social and political awareness.
Rapper and DJs disseminated their work by copying it on tape dubbing equipment and playing it on powerful, portable “ghetto blasters.” Break dancers used their health to mimic transformers and other futuristic robots in symbolic street battles. Although graffiti as a social movement first came out in New York during the late 1960s, it was not until almost a decade later that it developed elaborate styles and widespread attention. By the mid 70s, graffiti took on new focus and difficulty. It wasn’t the basic tagging designs like the past.
The issue of whether or not Hip Hop music plays a role in violent crime is a continual argument. Dennis R. Martin, president of the National Association of Chiefs of Police, theorizes that since music has the power both to calm the ravage beast and to stir violent emotions, then rising racial tensions and violence can be caused by rap music’s advertising of vile, deviant, and sociopathic behaviors. Criminologist Mark S. Hamm and Jeff Ferrell refuse Martin’s research into the relationship between music and violence, charging that theory is dependant on racism and ignorance of both music and cultural forces.
Reality rap has been criticized and debated over for its image sexual content material, violent symbolism and misogyny. Not just is the music violent but the rappers lifestyle also. Not all artists have run-ins with the law, but the ones that do are very well known like Tupac Shakur, who was killed a few years back, has had many run-ins with the law. Martin believes that lyrical references sufficiently strong enough usually takes over the subconscious causing people to act in ways they otherwise wouldn’t. The words in many songs contain violent and explicit vocals that usually discuss killing someone along with sounds of gunshots in the shadows.
